Job description

Salary: £56,988-£63,756 p/a + benefits

Closing date: Sunday 19th, April 2026.

Based: Islington, London – hybrid working

Location: Islington, London. Our hybrid working model enables us to enjoy the benefits of both office based and remote working. We ask that staff work from the office in Islington 40% of their time, with 20% required as a minimum. Reasonable adjustments as well as specific office based needs will be considered for those with long term health conditions and disabilities.

This is a unique opportunity for an experienced Policy lead to play a vital role in shaping ambitious solutions to halt and reverse biodiversity loss.

Greenpeace UK is a global movement of people passionate about defending the natural world. Independent from governments, corporations, and political parties, we are funded by individuals—giving us the freedom to challenge power and drive real change.

From our beginnings in 1971, to operating in over 40 countries today, our mission remains urgent: to secure a greener, healthier, and more peaceful planet for generations to come.

As our Biodiversity Policy Lead, you will power our campaigns with bold, innovative solutions to restore biodiversity by the end of the decade in a fair and equitable way. You will be at the heart of our biodiversity mission, helping us to think big about the solutions needed to meet the scale of the challenge we face.

Job requirements

You will achieve this by:

  • Driving bold, science-informed policy solutions to restore nature at scale

  • Providing strategic insight across UK and global campaigns

  • Working closely with senior leaders, scientists and campaigners to provide strategic thinking, spot emerging issues and opportunities to advance our campaign

  • Responding rapidly to political and environmental developments

  • Helping to influence public debate and decision-making at the highest levels

About you
You are a highly knowledgeable and strategic policy expert with a deep commitment to tackling the biodiversity crisis. You combine scientific understanding with political awareness, and you’re motivated by the opportunity to turn complex challenges into bold, practical solutions.

 Essential Criteria for Success

  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of domestic and global nature policy, including key legislative processes, international agreements and governance structures

  • Significant experience of policy development and report writing based on research, analysis and science-informed policy development

  • The ability to turn complex scientific or policy information into accessible, compelling briefings for a range of internal and external audiences

  • Highly collaborative and adept at building strong, productive relationships with external stakeholders and internal colleagues in order to achieve change

  • Demonstrable experience of monitoring the policy landscape and identifying emerging issues in order to provide expert advice and influence decision-making in fast-paced situations

  • Proven track record of commitment to anti-racism and a strong understanding of how to embed equity, inclusion and anti-oppressive principles into policy solutions.

We give you:
You’ll be encouraged to develop both personally and professionally, taking advantage of the wide range of learning and development opportunities available to our staff. We offer great benefits such as a generous pension scheme, subsidised lunches, free yoga and a wealth of well-being resources, just to name a few. Take a look at our Work for Greenpeace pages to find out more about what it’s like to work for us and why you should apply.

Our commitment to diversity:

We acknowledge that people from certain backgrounds are under-represented in environmental and campaigning organisations and we’re committed to doing what we can to correct this.

One of our Anti Racism Plan objectives is to proactively achieve stronger representation of people of colour, particularly within leadership positions, and we have recently published ambitious race representation targets

As part of our commitment to increasing representation of people from underrepresented communities in the environmental sector, we are piloting a Guaranteed Interview Scheme (GIS) as a new approach to make our recruitment more equitable. If you identify as a person of colour, you can choose to opt in to the Guaranteed Interview Scheme.

We will be aiming to offer everyone who opts into the scheme and meets the essential criteria a first stage interview. While we fully intend to honour this, exceptionally high application volumes may affect our capacity. If so, we will communicate clearly and keep candidates informed as we continue to learn and improve.
